Have you seen the Saturday Night Live sketch where Kenan Thompson plays a counselor who tells his clients “You have issues” (pronounced “ishas”)?

Mom On Mothers Day

We’ve all got “ishas” and tend to spend a fair bit of time trying to fix and change ourselves. I won’t claim to be free from “mommy ishas,” but, relatively speaking, I really lucked out in the parent department.  So I was quite happy about the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate my Mom (and all mothers) yesterday.

As I was speaking to my mom (who lives on the other side of the continent) on the phone yesterday, the flowers we had ordered arrived. Great timing. She was in awe that my visiting brother could take a picture on his phone and send it to me so I could see her and the flowers.

From Cosmologist Brian Swimme, who believes that our job as humans is to wonder and be in a state of wonder, to Rachel Carson, who wrote “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in,” there are some wonderful suggestions that we should live in that state of awe, wonder, and “the wow” of life.

What would it be like to marvel throughout today at every opportunity? Each time you use technology (like the one you are using as you read this) you could enjoy the amazement of how we are able to connect with others across our planet. When you look out the window or step into nature, you can take a moment of fascination and elation at the miracle of a flower or the majesty of a tree. Better yet, lend at least one child your companionship and let him or her introduce you to some wonder.

We live in a celebration-deprived society. How about taking the initiative today to celebrate, marvel, wonder and be amazed, delighted, and exhilarated? The universe abounds with material to have you be Psyched for Monday.
